WORKSHOPS: WRITING AND USING SPSS MACROS, SYNTAX and OMS

JUNE 2007: EDINBURGH and SHEFFIELD, UK

In 1996, 2000 and 2002 ASSESS gave one-day workshops on the subject of SPSS macros and syntax. Three day workshops are provisionally planned to be held in Edinburgh on the 20th-22nd June and in Sheffield on the 27th-29th June, led by Frances Provan (University of Edinburgh), Chris Stride (University of Sheffield), Peter Watson (MRC, Cambridge) and Rhiannon Whitaker (University of Bangor).

Provisional Agenda for the three days:

1. SYNTAX TOPICS

• Advantages of using command syntax,
• Using the syntax window,
• GET, SAVE, DOCUMENT, DISPLAY commands
• Defining variable attributes, Data types,
• Frequencies and Crosstabs, Correlations WITH subcommand,
• Scratch variables with compute statement
  Split file/aggregating files, Recode,
• Temporary command: use with select if; filtering
• examples of do repeat, match files, include command

2. MACRO TOPICS

• Introduction; creating and running macros: Handling Keywords, strings and things>
• Advanced concepts: String manipulation, conditional processing and loops Producing graphs such as clustered boxplots nesting macros
• Statistical examples

3. OMS AND OUTPUT

• Brief Introduction to OMS; What it does; how to run it
• Simple OMS examples involving tabular output
• Creating and editing graphs, (inc graph builder interactive graphs, chart looks, panels)
